Sept. 30, marks the 18th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Palestinian child Mohammed Al-Durra in the second day of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, making him the icon and inspiration of the Palestinian intifada, and a humanitarian symbol in a scene that the world will not forget

Eighteen years ago, Mohammed, a 12-year-old boy, was walking next to his father on Salah al-Din Street in the Gaza Strip to be shot by the Israeli occupation forces without guilt.

 

Mohammed and his father tried to hide behind a concrete barrel, while the father tried to protect his son with all his might. However, bullets broke through his right hand. Mohammed was shot first in the right leg, and then received more bullets in the back.

 

Mohammed immediately passed away, but his father survived.

 

The second Palestinian Intifada (uprising) broke out on September 28, 2000, following the storming of the former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, into Al-Aqsa Mosque, along with large army and police forces.

 

Sharon then toured the courtyard of the mosque and said that the “Temple Mount” would remain an Israeli area, provoking the Palestinians, and that clashes broke out between Israeli worshipers and soldiers.

 

Mohammed al-Durra has become a symbol of the second intifada, and his execution has angered the Palestinians everywhere, prompting them to break out in angry demonstrations and confront the occupation army.
