Arab League welcomes Spain’s readiness to recognise Palestine

Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit yesterday welcomed Spain’s readiness to recognise the state of Palestine

Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit yesterday welcomed Spain’s readiness to recognise the state of Palestine, noting this reflects historic friendship with the Arab states, a statement reported by Quds Press said.

In the statement, Aboul Gheit also called for Spain to go ahead with “unilateral recognition” of the State of Palestine, saying this would encourage more EU countries to follow in its footsteps.

He added that “all lovers of peace” should stand with the Palestinians following US President Donald Trump’s measures to isolate them.

Recognition of the State of Palestine, he explained, “is a necessary step to maintain the two-state solution which is currently in danger”.

On Wednesday, the Spanish foreign minister said that his country might recognise the State of Palestine, noting that this issue is on the EU’s agenda.

The Spanish official said that his country would give an ultimatum to the EU partners before reaching a consensus over the recognition, but he stressed that each country would take the decision it sees appropriate if they could not reach a consensus.
