Hamas asks Saudi Arabia to release Palestinian detainees
Senior Hamas official Mushir al-Masri has described the holding of a court hearing for Palestinian detainees in Saudi Arabia as a “departure from the normal Saudi position in support of the Palestinian cause,” urging the leadership in Riyadh to order their release.
“We regret that the Saudi authorities have brought some Palestinian leaders to trial, and we consider that a disregard for the depth of the historical relationship between the Palestinian and Saudi peoples,” Masri told Quds Press.
He stressed that the Palestinians should be respected and honored and not persecuted, jailed and litigated, calling on the Saudi authorities to renounce such behavior, which is religiously, nationally and morally unacceptable, and release the Palestinian detainees .
The Saudi security and legal authorities on Sunday held a court hearing for dozens of Palestinian and Jordanian detainees being held for long months, with no trials.
A criminal court judge in Saudi Arabia leveled unfounded charges related to terrorism against 68 detainees. Among them were Hamas official Mohamed al-Khudari, 81, and his son Hani, 49.
Following three hours of legal procedures, the judge adjourned the trial until Ramadan 12.
