Hamas: Ofer’s stabbing incident resulted from repressive measures

The Hamas Movement has described the stabbing incident that happened in the Ofer jail as a reflection of the anger prevailing among the Palestinian prisoners as a result of their exposure to ongoing suppressive practices at the hands of Israeli jailers.

A stabbing incident reportedly took place on Monday morning in Ofer jail, where a prisoner called Rabie Abu Nawas attacked and injured a prison guard. Recently, Israeli jailers have escalated their provocative and suppressive measures against Palestinian prisoners and such incident cannot be seen as separate from jailers’ offensive and arbitrary practices.

In press remarks, member of Hamas’s political bureau Mousa Dudeen affirmed that such incident was the result of the persistent Israeli violations against Palestinian prisoners, including children, women and patients.

Dudeen warned that the arbitrary measures that were taken by the Israeli prison service against the prisoners and their rights in violation of its previous understandings with them would lead to a massive popular uprising against the Israeli occupation state inside and outside jails.

He held the Israeli occupation authority fully responsible for the life and safety of prisoner Abu Nawas and other prisoners in its jails.

For his part, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said that the jailers’ “measures against the prisoners would not succeed in breaking their will,” affirming that the Palestinian people and their resistance would never forsake the prisoners and would support them in their struggle for their rights.

“What prisoner Rabie Abu Nawas did in Ofer jails was an act of resistance and reflected the size of injustice and pain [in jails],” spokesman Barhoum stated on Monday, addressing participants in a sit-in organized in the Gaza Strip in support of the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
