Israeli court extends electronic tagging of Sheikh Salah

The Israeli high court of justice on Tuesday approved a prosecutor’s request to extend the monitoring of Sheikh Ra’ed Saleh, head of the Islamic Movement in the 1948 occupied lands, with an electronic ankle tag (GPS and eavesdropping device)

Accordingly, Sheikh Salah will have the tracking device around his ankle for three additional months.

Lawyer Khaled Zabarqa, who represents Sheikh Salah, said that the Sheikh has been placed under home detention and electronic monitoring since July 6, 2018 after he spent 11 months in solitary confinement.

Zabarqa said that Sheikh Salah attended the court session on Tuesday and addressed the judges.

“After listening to all witnesses and Sheikh Salah regarding the case, it became evident that there was no justification whatsoever to keep the Sheikh under solitary confinement or any restraint,” the lawyer stated.

“There is no offense committed by the Sheikh, but it is political persecution for religious and ideological reasons,” he added.
