Israel’s military court sentences child to 5 years in jail
The Israeli military court on Sunday sentenced the Palestinian child Samer Abdel Kareem Oweis (17 years old) from Jenin to 5 years in jail.
Israeli forces had arrested the child on April 15, 2019. He was put in solitary confinement and subjected to torture for two months at the jails of Petah Tikva settlement.
Since he has been arrested, the Israeli authorities rejected to allow him to meet his jail father Abdel Kareem Oweis. The father is sentenced to life imprisonment and he, along with his jailed brother Hassan, was targeted in assassination trials.
Israeli forces arrested Samer’s brother, Rateb, on January 15, 2019, reuniting him with his father and allowing him to embrace his father for the first time since he was born. On July 14, 2020, Rateb was released after serving his one year and a half jail sentence.
Abdel Kareem’s brother, Hassan, was arrested in 2004 as he has been serving a two-life-imprisonment and 20 years sentence. Their brother Samer was murdered in 2002 by the Israeli army in an assassination attack using two bombs that were dropped at his car in Al Am’ari refugee camp.
The family of Abdel Kareem has been punitively prevented from jail visitation.
