Prisoner Alaa Hems suffers several serious health problems

Palestinian prisoner Alaa al-Hems, from the Gaza Strip, suffers from multiple serious health problems as a result of his exposure to medical neglect by the Israeli prison service.

According to the Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs, prisoner Hems did not suffer from any chronic health problem before his detention, but his condition suddenly worsened during his presence in Israeli jails.

The prisoner has been suffering for a while from tuberculosis, which developed into serious lung complications after he took medication prescribed by Israeli doctors.

Besides his lung problems, he also suffers from lymphoma, a tumor between his liver and stomach, severe pains in the bladder area where he underwent surgery last year, hematuria, acute gastritis, kidney pains, and frequent headaches.

Despite his great suffering and agony, he is only given 11 types of analgesic and sleeping medication.

Prisoner Hems, a father of four children, has been in jail since January 24, 2009, serving 29 years.
